Shadow Falls

Full residential makeover

When lightning struck a beloved ancient tree in their Shadow Falls backyard, this family on the east side of the Mississippi River transformed grief into possibility – reimagining their entire property over several phases into a landscape worthy of its stunning location. The project began with the backyard patio, where linear bluestone planking was laid to visually elongate the somewhat narrow space, creating clean sightlines that draw the eye toward the river below. The front yard followed, featuring a cut and patterned bluestone patio that serves as the perfect perch for watching the sun set over the Mississippi – a daily ritual made possible by the property's eastern vantage point. Finally, a custom sauna completed the transformation, creating a private wellness retreat that honors both Nordic tradition and the family's connection to this special place.

Native trees and plantings now fill the spaces left by the loss of that lightning-struck giant, creating habitat for wildlife while requiring minimal maintenance. The bluestone's varied installation styles – linear in back, patterned in front – respond to each space's unique character and function, proving that even within a single material, thoughtful design can create completely different experiences. The result is a phased landscape that evolved organically over time, each addition building on the last, until the property became what it was always meant to be: a true retreat that celebrates both the quiet intimacy of a backyard sauna and the dramatic grandeur of watching the sun drop behind the Mississippi River every single evening.
