Soak

Full residential makeover

In the compact urban setting of Linden Hills, a Scandinavian-born homeowner sought to bring the Nordic principles of simplicity, function, and connection to nature into their backyard. The design centers around a Soake Pool – a versatile vessel that functions as a refreshing pool throughout the summer months and transforms into a hot soaking tub come winter, making it a true four-season retreat. Clean lines and repetitive geometric patterns create visual rhythm throughout the space, echoing the modular design philosophy common in Nordic architecture where every element serves a clear purpose. The layout maximizes the modest urban lot by using restraint rather than excess, proving that a powerful outdoor experience doesn't require sprawling square footage.

Low-mow fescue lawn provides a soft, maintenance-minimal carpet that stays green without the constant upkeep of traditional turf, allowing more time for actually enjoying the space rather than maintaining it. The repetitive patterns in both hardscape and planting create a sense of order and calm that feels distinctly Scandinavian – intentional, uncluttered, and focused on the essentials. The result is an urban retreat that honors the client's Northern European roots while adapting to Minnesota's climate and lifestyle. It's a landscape stripped down to what matters most: clean design, functional beauty, and the year-round pleasure of stepping outside your back door into water, whether you're cooling off in July or soaking under winter stars.
